First Zero-Waste Stores at Albertsons

Supervalu Inc., along with its Albertsons banner of grocery stores, announced plans to transition 40 of its stores to zero waste operations by the end of February.

The initiative comes as part of Supervalu´s release of its 2011 Corporate Social Responsibility Report, which showed that the retailer became the first in the U.S. to achieve zero waste classification at two of its Albertsons grocery stores in Santa Barbara, Calif., in November.

The Eden Prairie, Minn.-based company said it accomplished the zero-waste feat at its two California stores in part through increased associate engagement, recycling, composting and the company´s Fresh Rescue food bank donation program, to which Supervalu contributed more than 60 million pounds of food last year.

Supervalu´s additional zero waste stores will be located primarily under the Albertsons banner; it plans to expand the effort across the company. To achieve zero-waste recognition, stores must divert at least 90% of all waste from landfills.
