New C&D Landfill Regulations Proposed in Ohio
The Ohio EPA has proposed new rules for existing construction and demolition debris landfills to control leachate.
The agency said it studied leachate from the landfills and found it poses a threat to public health and the environment if it is released to ground water or surface water.
The Ohio EPA is proposing to establish a five year post-closure care period; post-closure care financial assurance by the facility; extension of the post-closure care period if there is health or environmental impacts; and monitoring landfill leachate at the bottom of the landfill for certain contaminants and if they are detected, monitoring the ground water for that contaminant.
Public comment is being accepted on the issue until Jan. 3. For more information, visit the Ohio EPA online.
