Austin, Texas Sets Goal of 90% Diversion by 2030

The Austin City Council in Texas wants to decrease the amount of trash sent to landfills by 90% by 2030, according to the Austin Business Journal.

Officials approved a 30-year plan from Austin Resource Recovery, the city´s trash department, to fortify the city´s waste management programs, the paper reported.

Under the plan, the city will establish reuse centers and drop-off facilities, improve its single-stream recycling program by accepting a wider variety of materials, conduct a pilot curbside program to pick up yard waste, food scraps and compostable paper; develop a new Household Hazardous Waste Facility and institute universal recycling and composting requirements to all waste generators in the city.

“Austin Resource Recovery is transforming from an agency focused on waste management collection to one focused on materials resource management,” Bob Gedert, Austin Resource Recovery director, told the Journal. “This master plan is the road map to get us to zero waste.”
