Australia and New Zealand Recycling Platform Limited (ANZRP) today announced it has received approval from the Federal government to operate as an Approved Co-regulatory Arrangement under the Product Stewardship legislation.
ANZRP will start operating free e-waste drop off services and collection events for households and small businesses in metropolitan, regional and remote areas of Australia from July 2012. Recycling of e-waste will be compliant with sound environmental standards, diverting substantial volumes of waste which would otherwise end up in landfill.
“ANZRP is the result of ten years of effort and collaboration by representatives from major technology and television brands from the Australian Information Industry Association and the Consumer Electronics Suppliers’ Association. We are an industry-for-industry arrangement and our transparent, not for profit operating model will ensure a sound and environmentally responsible e-waste recycling solution for the community and our members,” said Carmel Dollisson, General Manager, ANZRP.
Regulatory Framework
ANZRP is an Approved Co-regulatory Arrangement under the Federal government’s Product Stewardship Act, 2011. Under the government’s National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme, importers, manufacturers and distributors of televisions and computers must join an arrangement to recycle end of life products. The Scheme aims to boost the recycling rate for televisions and computers from 17 per cent in 2010 to 80 per cent by 2020-21, and to provide a long-term solution to television and computer waste.
Under the Scheme the public will have greater access to television and computer recycling while helping Australia’s recycling industry to grow, reducing the volume of waste going to landfill and reducing the burden of cost to local government and the community.
Industry Backed and Led
ANZRP is a not for profit member body, with membership open to computer and television manufacturers, importers and distributors. ANZRP was kick-started by 13 major technology brands and will be funded by its members to meet their liability under the scheme.
“We are here to provide services to our members who are funding the scheme. We will ensure sound environmental, health and safety outcomes through an independent pool of logistics and recycling providers working with local councils and other sites to provide drop off venues for the community who together with the environment are the big winners.” said Carmel Dollisson.
