Consumers who redeem plastic bottles and aluminum cans in bulk will collect a little more money after the state on Thursday raised the minimum redemption rates.
Recycling centers now will pay $1 a pound for plastic bottles, an increase of 7 cents a pound.
The state increased the rate after determining that both consumers and companies weren’t receiving enough of the money collected in the California Redemption Value, or CRV, program.
The new rate is “more reflective of the true CRV in a pound of plastic,” said Mark Oldfield, a spokesman for the CalRecycle program.
The rate for aluminum cans Thursday increased 3 cents to $1.57 a pound. The rate for glass bottles increased a tenth of a cent to 10.5 cents a pound.
The redemption rate per individual container remains the same — 5 cents for containers under 24 ounces and 10 cents for those 24 ounces and above.
