Recycling companies are hauling and demanufacturing electronic goods collected by the EPA in Joplin.
MRC Recycling transported the first five truckloads of damaged electronics last week. It includes items like computers, appliances and televisions.
At its demanufacturing facility in Park Hills, MO it will break down the items and use the materials for new consumer products.
The work is one part of EPA’s tornado response mission assigned by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to collect and remove household hazardous waste from Joplin.
The EPA will soon select a choose a company to start recycling white goods. White goods are refrigerant containing appliances like freezers and air conditioners.
“One of our goals as we carry out this mission is to recycle as much of this material as possible,” EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks said. “Recycling is better for the environment, and it allows EPA to minimize the costs associated with collecting and transporting this material.”
The EPA and its contractors have collected or received a total of 43,411 items from Joplin’s tornado debris.
