LG Shares 'Techorating' TipsSpring is in the air and with it comes dusting off, organizing and tossing out the old. A growing decorating trend called techorating(TM) is generating a lot of buzz as spring cleaning sweeps the country. Techorating, a term first coined by LG Electronics USA, is the blending of modern technology with the art of decorating to create a functional, yet stylish environment.

Celebrity technology and design expert Janna Robinson and ESPN’s Stuart Scott teamed up with LG to launch the “Sport of Techorating,” a head-to-head championship competition between two dad bloggers. Robinson coached Michael Sheehan of Hightechdad.com as he squared off against Jim Lin of Busydadblog.com in a techorating battle, with Scott providing color commentary on the home design battle.

These two dad bloggers are competing for the best techorated living room with the help of some key LG products including the LG CINEMA 3D TV and the LG Home Theater System. Videos of the competition are posted on LG’s Facebook page where the public can vote on their favorite techorated room and enter for a chance to get their homes techorated to the max with LG’s Cinema 3D TV, LG’s Home Theater System and more.

“The beauty of techorating is that anyone can incorporate cool, up-to-date electronics into their interior if they have the right technology,” said Robinson. “It’s important to say ‘goodbye clutter’ and ‘hello technology’ while remaining true to your own style.”

LG Techorates in Style

LG is making techorating easy with its sleek, nearly frameless TVs that break the boundaries of traditional flat-panel sets. The latest innovation is the LG Cinema Screen design, which limits the frame of the TV to roughly 5 millimeters at its thinnest point – that’s less than 0.2 inches – giving it an even more streamlined, modern look resembling a movie theater screen. And at only 1.3 inches thin at its thinnest point, it has a sleek, contemporary design that enhances any room decor, offering a minimalist look for a premium, multi-sensory viewing experience.

LG’s CINEMA 3D TVs also have IPS panels, which are designed to make picture quality crisp and uncompromised from a wide range of angles in both 2D and 3D. With that luxury, consumers have less to worry about when deciding the seating layout of their rooms. As a bonus, LG CINEMA 3D technology lets viewers experience movie theater-style 3D at home with a great 3D image without the flicker of active-shutter glasses and virtually no cross-talk. In addition, their upgraded 2D to 3D Conversion allows consumers to watch any 2D content with an immersive 3D effect.*

Top Techorating Tips

No matter the size of the room or living space that is techorated, Robinson recommends following these important guidelines:

Choose the right size TV: To determine the optimal screen size for your room, use this simple calculation: determine how far you wish to sit from the screen, divide that number in half and that’s your ideal screen size (remember to do this based on the diagonal not the width). If you already have a screen and want to figure out how far to sit away from it, than double the diagonal.

Find the best TV position: Your TV picture will look best when viewed head on, so try and position your seating so you are eye-level with the center of the screen. Generally, make sure the center of your TV screen is mounted approximately 42- to 52-inches from the floor.

Achieve the best sound quality: If you have bare walls, floors, hardwood furniture and windows, then you might want to add an area rug and curtains to help absorb the sound, otherwise it will sound “echoey” and bright. Conversely, if your room has wall-to-wall carpeting, heavy curtains and lots of furniture, try adding some bookshelves or even hung art to help break up the sound waves. Ideally, you want a mixture of different surfaces and materials to ensure the best sound quality.

Create depth with darker paint: Painting the wall behind your TV a darker color (like a chocolate brown) will not only help with distracting glares, but accent walls are trending and can give the illusion of depth in your space.

Hide messy wires: Some furniture manufacturers make cool and trendy pieces designed to house components and have special channels to hide wires. Wireless AV-to-HDTV adapters wirelessly connect your home theater equipment to your TV. It’s ideal for wall-mounted TVs and allows you to store devices up to 100 feet away.

Give everyone a good view: Try and arrange the seating so everyone has a good view of the screen. Sectionals provide flexible seating configurations and are great options for media rooms. If you have a smaller space, bean bags and floor pillows are fun, comfortable and inexpensive options to provide more seating. They’re also easily stowable when not in use.

“Don’t make technology an afterthought; think about how you can seamlessly integrate into your space. That’s really what techorating is all about. The idea is for it to meld into the background, not overpower the room,” Robinson added.

For amateur techorators that find themselves in the market for new home entertainment gear, Robinson recommends an environmentally friendly way of disposing of old or unused electronics. The LG Electronics Recycling Program is designed to provide consumers with a convenient way to dispose of their used, unwanted, obsolete or damaged consumer electronics products.

By recycling old electronic products, useful materials such as glass, plastic and metal can be re-used in the manufacture of other products and minimizes the amount of potentially hazardous waste in the landfills. LG collected more than 10 million pounds of unused electronics for recycling in 2011, while urging consumers to replace recycled TVs with energy-efficient ENERGY STAR® qualified TVs.
