NewSKY, New Balances newest shoe design, is composed of a high quality polyester fabric called Eco-fi. This fabric is created from post-consumer plastic bottles, making the innovative shoes lighter than cotton and weather resistant.
Eco-fi is manufactured by Foss Manufacturing, a company dedicated to producing non-woven fabrics. The company creates the fabric by chopping plastic bottles into flakes, heating the flakes, and finally molding the fiber into the material needed.
After the material is molded, it’s treated with Fossheild technology, which is believed to reduce the growth of mold, bacteria and other funguses.
12 recycled plastic bottles create one pound of eco-fi fabric and 8 recycled plastic bottles combine to create one pair of newSKY shoes.
New Balance’s newSKY shoe concept follows the principles of reuse, renew and recycle, and is an example of how the company is keeping it’s commitment to changing the way footwear is created.
