Discarded plastic bags need not go to waste.
Old plastic bags are getting a new lease of life in a recycling factory in Shah Alam, Selangor. At the premises of Advance Recycle, the discards are transformed into recycled plastic pellets which are used to make stretch films (for packaging purposes), or sold to other plastic product manufacturers.
The old bags, being mostly packaging materials used in factories, are not heavily soiled like those from households and dumpsites, and so are easier to recycle.
Company managing director Randy Loh says almost all plastics can be recycled, save those which have been blended with other materials, such mixed nylon and drink sachets, which have layers of plastic and foil.
Also, some plastic wastes are left uncollected because of low value.
