Businesses and consumers in Pennsylvania will be banned from discarding covered electronic devices in regular kerbside waste collections under new regulations governing the recycling of waste electronics.
The Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) said that the Pennsylvania Covered Device Recycling Act, Enacted in 2010, will come into force on 24 January next year.
Under the Act consumers will not be permitted to dispose of covered devices, such as computers, laptops, monitors and televisions, with their kerbside collection.
The department added that this means that waste haulers will no longer be able to take covered devices unless the municipality has a kerbside electronics collection program that ultimately sends the devices to an electronics recycler.
