At a time when the environment is being seriously threatened by burgening proportions of e-waste, a fledgling Ahmedabad-based company Eco-friendly Computech Solutions is scripting a success story by generating public awareness on the issue and designing new ways of managing electronic waste
Huge hoardings strategically placed at prominent traffic junctions in Ahmedabad and other major cities of Gujarat these days are generating a buzz with their catchy “I Swear I Care” campaign which is exhorting people not to dispose e-waste but to recycle it in an eco-friendly way with the help of an IT company, ECS Infotech. This social-minded Ahmedabad-based corporate is also running workshops educating the masses about e-waste management and has already set up 38 collection centres across Gujarat with the aim of recycling e-waste and saving the environment.
Incorporated in 2009 by a self-proclaimed “technocrat” Vijaysinh Mandora, Eco-friendly Computech Solutions (ECS) is also making waves with its innovative business model which its promoter has code-named the “Four R” philosophy wherein the four Rs stand for reuse, refurbish, recover and recycle. Says the passionate environmentalist Mandora, “Being the son of a farmer, I am a son of the soil who has toiled on my father’s small farm in my native village Vautha, some 50 kilometres off Ahmedabad in my childhood. It’s because of this deep connect with nature that I know the importance of preserving our environment.”
But ECS isn’t Mandora’s first entrepreneurial venture. Few would be aware that it was Mandora who was the pioneer of the push-button telephone in Gujarat way back in 1992. “It was part of a project that I did for the state-owned IT major Gujarat Communications and Electronics Ltd (which was later privatised) as an engineering student of Pune University,” recalls Mandora. “I always aspired to do something innovative and completed this project in just three months.”
