RecycleMania 2011, a national competition among colleges and universities to collect the largest amount of recyclables and meet other goals, kicked off over this past weekend and runs through April 2.
“RecycleMania is a way to engage our community in reducing waste,” says Audrey Stewart, program coordinator for sustainability at Georgetown. “It helps us benchmark against other schools and gives people a reason to get enthusiastic about recycling for a couple months.”
Over a period of 10 weeks, 630 schools will report recycling and trash data. The schools are then ranked according to which ones collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita or have the highest recycling rate.
