Residents of Miami-Dade County, Fla. have doubled the amount of items that are recycled in the three years since the county started its single-stream curbside recycling program.

A totally of 170,067 tons of recyclable materials were collected between June 30, 2008 and May 31, 2011, said Kathleen Woods-Richardson, the county’s solid waste director.

“Recycling is good for the environment not only because it keeps a great deal of material out of the waste stream and allows us to save landfill space,” she said in a statement, “but also because it often takes fewer resources to make new products out of recycled materials than it does to use raw materials.”

The county’s Department of Solid Waste Management provides the curbside service for more than 350,000 single-family households in the unincorporated parts of the county, along with 21 participating municipalities.
