The University of California-Davis has been named the diversion rate champion during the U.S. EPAґs 2011 Game Day Challenge.
Last fall, UC-Davis and 74 other colleges and universities, along with their 2.7 million fans, diverted more than 500,000 pounds of waste at college football games, according to a news release.
UC-Davis, which was the first to initiate a zero waste goal in 2007 at its stadium, had a nearly 94% diversion rate.
“Reducing, reusing and recycling moves our nation towards an environmentally and economically greener, sustainable tomorrow,” Mathy Stanislaus, assistant administrator for EPAґs Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, said in a statement. “These schools and fans have taken the lead through the Game Day Challenge, and now they are ready and equipped with tools and resources to continue to reduce waste across all campus activities and beyond.”
Other winners include the University of Virginia, for per capita recycling and greenhouse gas reduction; Marist College, for per capita organics reduction; and Central Connecticut State University, for per capita waste generation.
